Duncan Hannah

Duncan Hannah’s paintings, drawings and collages draw on a fictionalized euro-centric past. His subjects range from schoolchildren, ocean liners, movie stars, the streets of London and Paris, foreign sports cars, Spitfires, Penguin books, mountain climbers, and female nudes. As critic Adrian Dannatt wrote, “Behind these beautiful paintings lies a persistent uncertainty: this idealized world will not end well at all. And it is forever lost.” Hannah has had over sixty solo exhibitions since his 1981 debuts in the groundbreaking “Times Square Show” and “New York/New Wave” at P.S. 1. He has recently shown at Jeff Bailey Gallery (Hudson, NY), Castillo/Corrales (Paris), the Ornis A. Gallery (Amsterdam) and Modernism (San Francisco). His work is in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as the private collections of Mick Jagger, George Clooney, Thurston Moore, Vincent Gallo, David Johansen, Linda Nochlin, George Condo, Philip Taaffe, James Nares, Anna Sui, Genesis P. Orridge & the late Allen Ginsberg. Hannah is the recipient of a 2011 Guggenheim Fellowship.
